Bloomsburg Remains Unbeaten; Blanks Mercyhurst 3-0

Sept. 11, 2005

Stats

Erie, Pa. - The Bloomsburg Huskies, defending Division II national champs, scored twice late in the first half and went on from there to defeat stubborn Mercyhurst 3-0. The Huskies improved to 5-0 while the Lakers concluded a six-game home stand to start the season at 1-5.

Freshman forward Jamie Vanartsdalen's breakaway tally at 31:22 proved to be the only marker Bloomsburg would need. Freshman midfield Venessa Witman scored three minutes later on a rebound and sophomore forward Ashley Heckard tipped in junior Maribeth Brozena's pass following a penalty corner five minutes into the second half to complete the scoring.

Mercyhurst could never generate a sustained attack and was outshot 26-7. Junior goalie Julie Smith played a strong game in goal for the Lakers and was credited with a dozen saves. Junior Tracey Hudak made four saves for Bloomsburg.

Mercyhurst will take to the road for the first time this season when they play both Philadelphia and CW Post next Friday and Sunday respectively.
