Lakers Shut Out Bellarmine

Sept. 8, 2006

Stats

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst field hockey team got its first shutout of the year, defeating Bellarmine 2-0 Friday evening at Tullio Field. The Lakers scored once in each half to come away with the convincing victory.

Mercyhurst outshot Bellarmine 21-6 but only held an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. However, the Lakers' Erin Kelleher posted her first goal of the year with under six minutes to play in the first half to give Mercyhurst a 1-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, Vanessa Mourey picked up a rebound after a shot and scored her second goal of the year in the 62nd minute to ice the game.

Laker goalkeeper Julie Smith made five saves for her 14th career shutout as Mercyhurst improved to 2-1 on the season.

After playing each of their first three contests at home, the Lakers will begin a stretch of eight consecutive road contests at Bloomsburg Sunday at noon.
