Erie, Pa. - Junior Sara Hohenberger scored twice and added an assist as UMass-Lowell defeated host Mercyhurst 5-3 Friday at Tullio Field. UMass-Lowell improved to 2-0 while the Lakers dropped to 1-3.

Mercyhurst got on the board first when senior Misty Dennis scored on a pass from senior Katie King. The goal came on a penalty corner. But the River Hawks scored less than a minute later when Hohenberger scored past junior goalkeeper Julie Smith. Hohenberger would score her second of the game four minutes later, but the Lakers tied the game up at two apiece just over a minute to go in the half on a goal by junior Lauren MacEllven. It was MacEllven's team-leading fourth goal of the season.

Senior Joanna DaLuze put UMass-Lowell up for good just two minutes into the second half on a goal assisted by Hohenberger. The River Hawks then scored two goals eight minutes apart to put the game away. Mercyhurst cut the lead to two on a goal by freshman Haley Brochu, but it was not enough.

Smith made four saves for her third loss, while junior Nicole Staiti also made four saves for the win.

Mercyhurst will entertain Shippensburg Saturday, September 3, at 5:00pm at Tullio Field.
