Amy Achesinski Named GLIAC South Player of the Week
Nov. 27, 2007
Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst College freshman forward Amy Achesinski needed little time to adjust to the college basketball game. Just four games into her career, Achesinski was named GLIAC South Player of the Week after averaging 22.0 points and 9.0 rebounds in two games for the Lakers during the past week. Achesinski posted the second double-double of her short career in a loss to No. 18 Northern Kentucky, finishing with 20 points and 12 rebounds. In a hard-fought loss to Tiffin, she had 24 points and six rebounds, while going 12-of-12 at the free-throw line. For the week, she made 24-of-26 free-throws, shot 56 percent from the field and added five assists, three blocks and two steals. In the first game of her career, Achesinski had 17 points and 16 rebounds in leading Mercyhurst to a 67-61 win over Mansfield. She was the first Mercyhurst player to debut with a double-double since Karin Salem had 12 points and 12 rebounds Nov. 16, 1990. After a loss to Slippery Rock Monday night, Mercyhurst is now 1-4 on the season. The Lakers open conference play Thursday by hosting Michigan Tech at 6 p.m. Mercyhurst then hosts GLIAC opponent Northern Michigan Saturday at 1 p.m. |
