Lakers Come Up Short in 76-71 Loss to Ashland

Erie, Pa. - Despite shooting 21-for-24 from the free throw line and narrowing a double-digit deficit, the Mercyhurst Lakers suffered a 76-71 loss to the Ashland Eagles on Thursday. Amy Achesinski continues to lead the Lakers offensively, earning her fourth double-double of her career with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

The Eagles quickly built a lead early in the contest but the Lakers stayed within five points for the first eleven minutes of play. Ashland finally broke away from the Lakers at the 12:43 mark with a 6-0 run. Elizabeth O'Brien and Lacy Romine led the Eagles with 11 and 10 points respectively, while no Lakers were able to break into double figures in scoring in the first half

By halftime, Ashland held a sizable 12 point at 38-26. The Lakers' hardships were a product of 18 turnovers in the first half, with Ashland only committing nine.

Mercyhurst picked up its offensive efforts in the second half, outscoring the Eagles 45-38. In addition to Achesinski's double-double, Paris Pugliese helped out with 19 points and four rebounds, and Stephanie Prischak added 18 points and seven rebounds. Stevie Spetoskey had 15 points and four rebounds as well. The Lakers struggled from three point range, shooting 4-for-17.

Mercyhurst falls to 5-10 this season and are 0-5 in the GLIAC. With the win, Ashland climbs to 9-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play. The Lakers will return to the court Saturday when they play host to Findlay at 1 pm.
