Mercyhurst Falls 85-68 to the Gannon Knights

Erie, Pa. - Amy Achesinski scored 25 points to lead all scorers against cross-town rival Gannon, but Mercyhurst could not pull out a win in a 85-68 loss on Saturday.

Mercyhurst started the game strong with five points from Achesinski only to have Gannon fight back to regain the lead before the half. The Lakers were unable to get within less than nine points for the rest of the game.

Mercyhurst held the advantage over the Knights until the 12 minute mark in the first half with accurate three-point shooting from Samantha Loadman, Stevie Spetoskey and Stephanie Prischak. Gannon pulled ahead at the nine minute mark and extended its lead to nine by the end of the half. .

In the second half, turnovers plagued the Lakers as the Knights pulled out to a 16 point lead two minutes into the half and never looked back. Gannon's Christina Freeman led the Knights with 23 points and six rebounds. The Knights also owned the paint, putting up 40 points to the Lakers 28.

Accompanying Achesinski's 25 points offensively for the Lakers was Loadman with 13 points and Paris Pugliese with 10. The difference in the game came on points off turnovers where the Knights capitalized on the Lakers 17 turnovers for 28 points.

Gannon improves to 9-4 on the year and 3-1 in GLIAC play.

The Lakers (5-9.0-4) will look for their first conference win against GLIAC opponent Ashland at home on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
