ERIE, Pa. -
J.J. Zanetta, Don Cummings, Andy Lamancusa and Zack Schafer are all ranked No. 1 at their respective weights in the latest NCAA Division II East Regional Rankings. As a team, the Lakers rank third.
No other school in the region has more than a pair of wrestlers in the top spot in their weight class and Mercyhurst's eight total ranked individuals are second only to Pitt-Johnstown's nine.
Zanetta, fresh off a win over the nation's No. 2 wrestler, occupies the top spot at 141 with a 26-5 record. He leads the Lakers in wins and has won 10 straight duals.
Cummings, 16-5 on the year, is ranked No. 1 at 149. Lamancusa, a freshman, matches Cummings with 16 wins to claim top honors at 157.
Schafer is ranked No. 1 at 174 with a mark of 25-6 on the year and recently had a 16-bout win streak snapped.
Other Lakers ranked at their weights include Payne Lint (14-15) ranked No. 4 at 125, Hudson Harrison (16-11) ranked No. 5 at 165, Trevor Gallo (17-14) ranked No. 6 at 197 and Kenny Bluska (15-7) ranked No. 5 at 285.
Pitt-Johnstown remained the top team in the region, while West Liberty State again rated No. 2. The Lakers were third, with Newberry and Kutztown rounding out the top five.
Mercyhurst will battle all 12 other regional foes with bids to the NCAA Division II Championships on the line this weekend when the Lakers travel to the NCAA Division II East Regional hosted by UNC-Pembroke. Action gets underway at 4:00 PM on February 23 and continues at 10:00 AM on February 24.
