Mercyhurst Suffers Three Losses to Division I Squads at Fighting Scot Duals

Edinboro, Pa.- Mercyhurst's Brian Pogel posted a 2-0 record, but the Lakers suffered three defeats at the hands of Division I squads Edinboro, Army and Maryland at the season opening Fighting Scot Duals Saturday afternoon. Pogel, wrestling at 149 pounds earned a 9-4 decision over Edinboro's Thomas Straughn and later recorded a 12-4 major decision against Ryan Nye of Army. Also at 149 pounds, Don Cummings, the nations No.3-ranked wrestler in the weight class, posted a 9-5 decision against Maryland's Eric Medina, completing a 3-0 afternoon for the Lakers at 149 pounds. However, Edinboro, ranked No. 16 in Division I defeated Mercyhurst 35-3 in the event's opening dual on its way to a spotless 3-0 record on the day. Pogel earned Mercyhurst's lone win over the hosts. Against Maryland, Cummings picked up three points with his decision and Brian Wolff at 184 pounds and freshman heavyweight Nathan Sharp each won by forfeit, but Maryland proved to be too much, recording two falls, one technical fall and on major decision en route to a 30-15 win. In the events final dual, the Lakers received victories from Pogel, senior Hudson Harrison and junior Trevor Gallo, but fell short of Army by a 31-13 score. Harrison, wrestling at 165 pounds, picked up an 11-6 decision over John Drew. Gallo recorded the Lakers' only fall of the three duals when he pinned Nick Parisi in 1:42. Saturday's event marked the beginning of Mike Wehler's tenure as head coach of the Lakers. He is just the second coach in the program's history, as he took over for Tony Cipollone during the summer. The Lakers, ranked No. 16 in Division II, play host to eight teams on Saturday, Nov. 10 as the National Catholic Invitational takes place in the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
