Laker Water Polo Cracks CWPA Top 10
Sept. 5, 2007
Erie, Pa. - Following a season opening 17-7 win over Lindenwood at the Navy Labor Day Open, the Mercyhurst men's water polo team landed a spot in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Poll. The win over Lindenwood was the first season-opening win in program history, and the Lakers were rewarded with a No. 10 ranking after receiving 49 points. The Lakers were one of the biggest movers in the weekly poll, moving into the top 10 after not receiving votes the previous week. They are also the lone Division II team represented in the poll. The No. 10 ranking is the second highest in school history behind a No. 9 ranking on Sept. 13, 2006. The Lakers went on to finish the season with a school record 12 victories. The U.S. Naval Academy holds down the No. 1 spot for the second-straight week and St. Francis (N.Y.) ranks second, while two future Mercyhurst opponents, Bucknell and Princeton, rank third and fourth respectively. The Lakers travel to Princeton, N.J. for the Princeton Invitational on Sept. 8-9. The team is scheduled for three games against Iona, Queens (N.Y.) and Princeton on Saturday. |
