Best Season In Program History Ends In Southern Division Tourney

Lewisburg, Pa. - The Mercyhurst men's water polo completed its best season in the six year history of the program, placing seventh at the CWPA Southern Division Championships. The Lakers split four games in the tournament and ended 12-8 on the season. After a loss to No. 18 Bucknell and a win over Penn State Behrend Friday, the Lakers lost to George Washington in the Friday nightcap 18-8. Kane Ashton had three goals and Zach Bell added two. Andrew Schonhoff had four drawn ejections and was one of three players with one goal, to go with Kevin Riordan and Trevor McIlwaine. Mercyhurst completed the tournament by defeated Washington and Jefferson Saturday 9-7. The Lakers got seven assists from Riordan, while Schonhoff had three goals, six drawn ejections and two steals. Ashton also had three goals. Kyle Bogucki made nine saves in goal and added three steals. Mercyhurst completed its year by going 5-1 in the Southern Conference, Western Division, tying Gannon for the top spot. During one stretch, the Lakers won 10 consecutive matches and then 12-8 record easily surpassed the previous best mark of 7-11 in 2004. |
