Laker Water Polo Falls to MIT in Small School Championship game
Oct. 28, 2007 Erie, Pa. - After steamrolling to a first-place finish in the Division II Eastern Championships on Saturday, the Lakers fell to Division III champion and tournament host MIT on Sunday by a 12-10 final. The Lakers (13-7) received three goals from Division II tournament MVP Andrew Schonhoff and three from junior Alex Perry, but MIT's John Preiss scored five times and Devin Lewis and Mike Smith-Bronstein also tallied three goals apiece. Mercyhurst trailed 4-2 at the half but battled back to tie the game with five goals in the third period. But in the fourth, MIT outscored the Lakers 5-3 to earn the victory. Freshman goalie Andy Sekulski made eight saves for the Lakers. Juniors Oscar Calderon and Jorge Montero each tallied a pair of goals. It was the first time in school history that Mercyhurst had played for the Small College Tournament title. The team earned the berth after defeating Gannon 13-8 on Friday to win the Division II Eastern Championship. Not only did Schonhoff received MVP honors, but head coach Curtis Robinette was named the tournament's most outstanding coach. Schonhoff, Ryan Holt, Jake Coin and Kevin Riordan all earned Division II Eastern All-Tournament Team First Team honors, and Perry and Sekulski were named to the second team. Mercyhurst heads to Annapolis, Md., for the Southern Championships on Nov. 3-4. Competition opens for the Lakers at 3:15 p.m. against Penn State Behrend. |
