Men's Water Polo Competes In Southern Championships
Oct. 28, 2006
Lewisburg, Pa. - The Mercyhurst men's water polo team competed in the Southern Championships Saturday as the No. 4 seed in the nine team tournament. The Lakers tied for the Western Division Championship but had its seed lowered by virtue of tiebreakers. The Lakers opened play against Bucknell, the No. 18 team in the country. The Lakers were never able to get things going, falling behind 7-1 after one period and 12-1 after two. Mercyhurst did play better in the second half, but the Bison were too strong. Five different players scored goals for the Lakers and Kane Ashton had three steals, two drawn ejections and an assist. Kevin Riordan allowed just five goals during the second half of play. In Mercyhurst's second game, the Lakers defeated Penn State Behrend for the third time this year, winning 10-6. The Lakers outscored Behrend 6-2 in the middle two quarters to pull out the win. Andrew Schonhoff had four goals, three drawn ejections, two steals and an assist. Riordan added four assists and two steals, while Oscar Calderon had three steals. Kane Ashton posted two goals, while Kyle Bogucki played the entire match in net, making nine saves. Mercyhurst (11-7 on the year) continues play in the Southern Championships by playing George Washington at 9 p.m. Saturday night. |
