Lakers Rout Salem International to Advance at Division II/III Eastern Championships
Oct. 27, 2007 DIVISION II EASTERN CHAMPIONSHIPS SITE Cambridge, Mass.- With Ashton Farrell leading the offensive charge and a defense that didn't allow a goal through the first three quarters, the Mercyhurst men's water polo team routed Salem International 10-1 to advance to the Division II Championship at the CWPA Division II Eastern Championships in Cambridge, Mass. With the win, the Lakers earned their 12th victory of the season, improving to 12-6 overall. That matches the school's single season record for wins in a season that was set by the 2006 squad. The win also gives the Lakers a berth into the Division II championship tilt on Saturday night. They will face arch rival Gannon at 8:15 p.m. Against Salem International, Farrell scored a career-high seven goals. In Mercyhurst's three wins over the Tigers this season, Farrell has totaled 18 goals. Freshman Alex Moggridge, senior Kyle Bogucki, and regular goalie Andy Sekulski also scored one goal apiece. The Lakers jumped out to a 6-0 lead at the half and pushed the lead to 8-0 entering the final period. Salem International's Frank Nichols scored his team's only goal in the fourth period. The Lakers used four different goalies in the game. Sekulski got the start, but gave way to Oscar Calderon, Andrew Schonhoff and Jorge Montero. Schonhoff worked the third period and made a team-high three saves. The Lakers and Gannon match-up later tonight, the team's have split their two meetings this year. Mercyhurst won 16-9 at home, while Gannon won 11-10 in overtime in the conference opener. A win over Gannon would put the Lakers in the Small College Championship match against the Division III championship winner at 11:45 a.m. on Sunday. |
