Water Polo Offense Erupts for 21 Goals in Rout of W&J

North East, Pa. - Needing a win to secure a share of the CWPA Southern Division, Western Region crown, the Mercyhurst men's water polo team answered with it's most impressive offensive performance of the season, and it was seniors Kevin Riordan and Kyle Bogucki that stole the show. The two seniors, playing in their final game at the North East Aquatic Center combined for eight goals, five assists and seven steals to lead the Lakers to a 21-8 rout of Washington & Jefferson. The win improves the Lakers' season mark to 11-5 overall--one win shy of tying the school record for wins in a season--and 7-1 in conference play. After opening conference play with an 11-10 loss at Gannon, the Lakers won seven-straight to produce a 7-1 record giving them a CWPA Southern Division, Western Region co-championship for the second-consecutive season. Riordan, who entered the match as Mercyhurst's all-time leader in assists and points, added to his record by scoring a match-high five goals and recording three assists. Bogucki, after playing much of his career as a goalie,scored three times, tallied four steals and handed out two assists. Junior Alex Perry also chipped in four goals and three assists. Junior Andrew Schonhoff added three goals and Ryan Holt chipped in two goals. Mercyhurst built an 8-3 lead at the half and effectively put the game away with seven goals in the third and then tacked on six more in the final period. Freshman goalie Andy Sekulski totaled five assists and four steals to go along with 13 saves. The Lakers travel to Norton, Mass., to take on Brown in a non-conference matchup on Oct. 26 before heading to MIT to compete in the Division II Eastern Championships. |
