Gannon Hands Mercyhurst Only CWPA Loss Of Year

Oct. 19, 2006

Stats

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst men's water polo team lost its only Collegiate Water Polo Association match of the year, dropping a 13-10 decision to Gannon Thursday. The Lakers end the regular season with a 10-6 overall record and a 5-1 conference mark.

Although Mercyhurst completed its most successful season in program history, the Lakers were left with a sour taste after a poor second period gave Gannon a lead it would not relinquish.

Mercyhurst, which defeated Gannon 18-17 earlier this year, led 4-3 after one period. But the Knights stormed back with to take an 8-6 lead at the midway point and built that advantage to 11-8 after three. The Lakers were unable to get back to even footing, scoring just twice in the final period.

Jorge Montero led the Lakers with three goals, while Oscar Calderon finished with three assists, two steals and two drawn ejections. Kane Ashton, Kevin Riordan and Kyle Bogucki each scored two goals for Mercyhurst.

Bogucki and Riordan split time in goal. Riordan made seven saves and allowed six goals, while Bogucki had five saves and allowed seven goals.

Mercyhurst ends the regular season with three straight losses after being affected by injuries. The Lakers will be the No. 4 seed in the CWPA South Conference Tournament, which will take place October 28-29 in Lewisburg, Pa. The Lakers will open play against the No. 5 seed.
