Gannon Outscores Mercyhurst, 17-10

North East, Pa. - Gannon scored five unanswered goals in the second quarter to break a 3-3 tie and went on from there to defeat Mercyhurst 17-10 Tuesday night in a Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) match held at the Mercyhurst-North East Aquatic Center. Gannon improved to 5-9 overall and to 5-3 in the conference while the Lakers dropped to 4-10 and 2-6 respectively.
Both teams scored three times in the first quarter before the Golden Knights went to work and dropped a five-spot on the Lakers in the next seven minutes to assume an 8-3 lead at intermission.
Both teams scored five times in the third period before Gannon extended the final margin to seven with a 4-2 advantage in the fourth quarter. The win gave Gannon the season series, 2-1.
Freshman Jorge Montero and sophomore Kevin Riordan led the Lakers with three goals apiece while Gannon senior Christian Torchio led all scorers with six markers. Nine different players scored for Gannon.
Sophomore Brandon Thomas went all the way in goal for Gannon. Senior Patrick Staab (first and third) and freshman Jeff Tullis (second and fourth) split the goaltending duties for Mercyhurst.
Both teams will compete in the Division II Eastern Championships this weekend at Salem International.
