Gannon Outlasts Mercyhurst, 11-10
Oct. 4, 2005
Erie, Pa. - Gannon avenged an earlier setback to Mercyhurst by edging the Lakers 11-10 Tuesday night at the Gannon pool. The Lakers dropped to 3-7 overall and to 1-5 in the College Water Polo Association (CWPA). The Golden Knights improved to 3-7 and 3-2 respectively.
Gannon's combined 9-4 advantage in the first and third quarters proved the difference in the game. The Lakers started slowly and trailed 4-2 after the first seven minutes. But a 4-1 advantage in the second quarter propelled Mercyhurst into a 6-5 lead at intermission.
Gannon regrouped to outscore the Hurst 5-2 in the third for a 10-8 margin after three. Mercyhurst fought back in the fourth, only to fall a marker short.
After a 3-3 start, including a non-conference 12-7 win at Gannon on September 24, Mercyhurst's first win over the Knights in 12 meetings, the Lakers have now dropped four straight.
Mercyhurst will resume play Saturday, October 8, with matches against Iona and Fordham at the Fordham Invitational.
