Erie, Pa. - Using a stingy defense and balanced scoring attack, the Mercyhurst men's water polo team notched its third-straight conference win with a 13-4 victory at local rival Penn State Behrend on Sunday.

The win improved the Lakers' overall record to 7-5 and their Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division, Western Region record to 3-1. During the three-game winning streak, the Lakers have outscored their opponents 42-16.

After one quarter, the score stood 3-2 in favor of the Lakers, but they quickly pulled away, out-scoring the Lions 9-0 over through the second and third quarters.

Keeping the Lions off the board was freshman Andy Sekulski, who totaled 12 saves and recorded three steals while playing all four quarters in goal. Six other Lakers recorded at least two steals and Ryan Holt notched three.

Mercyhurst received scoring from eight players. Leading the way for the second-straight game was junior Andrew Schonhoff with three, giving him 11 in his last two outings. Schonhoff also added two assists and two steals.

Along with his stellar defensive play, Holt chipped in two goals and an assist. Junior Alex Perry and freshman Ryan Speers each scored twice, and junior Kevin Riordan scored one goal and totaled three assists and two steals.

Mercyhurst travels to Salem, W.Va. to take on Salem International on Oct. 13. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
