Lakers Split Water Polo Matches At Navy Open
Sept. 3, 2006 Annapolis, Md. - The Mercyhurst men's water polo team concluded its season opening tournament by splitting two matches at the Navy Open Sunday. The Lakers lost to Fordham 10-7 before defeating Queens 11-10.
Now 1-3 on the season, Mercyhurst fought back from a 7-6 deficit after two quarters against Queens to tie the score at 9-9 after three. The Lakers then scored three critical goals in the fourth to come away with the 11-10 victory.
Oscar Calderon paced Mercyhurst with seven steals, while Jorge Montero finished with a team-high five goals. Zach Bell tallied three scores while Kevin Riordan added two.
In the loss to Fordham to start the day, Andrew Schonhoff, Bell and Riordan each had two goals, while Kane Ashton and Calderon each drew three ejections.
Mercyhurst is off until competing at the Princeton Invitational Friday and Saturday. The Lakers will meet Pacific at 10:15 a.m. and will then face Iona at 3:15 p.m. and Queens at 8:15 p.m. |
