Water Polo Opens Season At Navy Open

Annapolis, Md. - The Mercyhurst men's water polo team got its season underway Saturday at the Navy Open. The Lakers lost to Johns Hopkins 17-7 and to Iona 12-10 to start the year.
John Hopkins jumped out to a 5-1 lead after one period and never looked back, outscoring the Lakers 4-3 in the second and 7-2 in the third. Sophomore Andrew Schonhoff had a team-high three goals, while Oscar Calderon finished with two steals and five drawn ejections. Kyle Bogucki played all four quarters in goal, making five saves.
In the second match, Mercyhurst built a 3-1 lead after one period, but Iona battled back for a 7-6 lead by the end of the second. Schonhoff again led the team with four goals and added two steals and two drawn ejections. Zach Bell added three goals and Bogucki had 11 saves in goal, while adding one steal.
Mercyhurst (0-2) continues play at the Navy Open Sunday against Fordham at 10:20 a.m. and against Queens at 4:10 p.m. |
