Lakers Down Medaille in Five Games

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst came back from being down two games to defeat Medaille College 26-30, 27-30, 30-19, 30-27, 15-11 on Tuesday night at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.

After dropping the opening two games, the Lakers turned the momentum around to win the final three games. In game four, the Mavericks made a 5-0 run to cut a late deficit to 29-27, but the Lakers held them off to push for game five.

The deciding game was a back-and-forth battle with the Lakers down 10-9 when the team went on a 6-1 run to win the match. Back-to-back kills by Marcus Dos Santos put the Lakers ahead 12-10. Another kill by Dos Santos made the game 14-11 and a block assist by Mike Palaschak and Jeff Hartman put the game away 15-11.

For the Lakers, Tim Wagner led with 16 kills, two aces, three digs, and seven block assists. Dos Santos contributed 15 kills, six digs, one block solo, and one block assist. Dave Newman had 13 kills, one ace, two digs, and eight block assists. Palaschak led the team with ten block assists and one block solo. Hartman and Jordan Pierson each contributed 11 digs and David Hatten had 49 assists. Hartman posted a career high in digs and added six block assists.

In game one, the Lakers led by seven points, 18-11, but the Mavericks came back to tie the game at 23 and eventually won 30-26. The Mavericks took over game two and led wire-to-wire.

The Lakers combined for 20.5 team blocks, a mark which had not been reached since recording 24.5 on February 6, 2003 against D'Youville College.

The Mavericks were led by Brett Wood with 16 kills and Jake Beiter with 15. Sam Beiter contributed 11 digs.

Up next for the Lakers is Loyola College at home on Saturday, March 24 at 4:00 p.m.
