Lakers Lose Tough Battle To D'Youville

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst men's volleyball team played at home Tuesday for the first time in a month, losing a tough four game battle against D'Youville College, 30-26, 28-30, 30-24, and 30-27. In all statistical areas but one, Mercyhurst outplayed D'Youville. However, the Lakers posted 23 service errors to D'Youville's eight and that, ultimately, was the deciding factor. In game one, D'Youville led for most of the game and took advantage of the 11 service errors by the Lakers. In game two, the Lakers overcame a 23-26 deficit to tie the game at 27 and went on to win the game. In games three and four, D'Youville took control until the Lakers tied game four at 22-22. Then D'Youville took over to win the match. For the Lakers, Dave Newman, Tim Wagner, Marcus Dos Santos, Pete Swauger, and Jordan Pierson all had one of their best matches of the year. Newman had a season and career high of 24 kills (.476 hitting percentage), while Wagner had a season high of 21 kills. Dos Santos had a season and career high of 16 kills and Swauger had a team season high of 61 assists. Pierson added a team season high of 14 digs. In addition, Newman had six total blocks and Wagner had four total blocks. The Lakers combined for nine total blocks to just five for D'Youville. The D'Youville Spartans were led by Jon Colosi, who contributed 20 kills, and Clinton Gilliland, with 14 kills. Chris Flierl had 16 digs, Chris Heftka had 13, and John Kofmehl added 11.
