Lakers Drop Five-Game Match To Medaille

Jan. 22, 2008

Box Score

Buffalo, N.Y. - The Mercyhurst College men's volleyball team went on the road for the first time in 2008 but the change in scenery was not enough of a spark for the Lakers to pick up their first win, losing to Medaille 25-30, 30-24, 30-21, 28-30, 15-12 Tuesday. With the loss, Mercyhurst falls to 0-5 on the season.

Mercyhurst lost in five games for the second time this season, dropping the match despite winning the opening game and taking the momentum of a 30-28 victory in game four into the finale.

The Lakers had no answer for Medaille's Ryan Metz, who finished with 29 kills on the evening. Mercyhurst was led by Dave Newman, who had 15 kills in 24 swings and a .583 attack percentage. The Lakers outblocked Medaille 14.0-7.0 but the Mavericks made up for that with eight service aces.

Freshman Jonathan Gurr also had 15 kills and junior Tim Wagner ended with 14. David Hatten had 44 aces and 11 digs, while Jordan Pierson totaled a game-high 16 digs. Newman added seven blocks.

Mercyhurst will look for its first win this weekend when the Lakers play back-to-back road contests. The Lakers will play at Juniata Friday at 7 p.m. and will then play at St. Francis (Pa.) Saturday at 1 p.m.
