No. 10 IPFW Overpowers Mercyhurst

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst men's volleyball team opened Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) play with a 30-19, 30-19, 30-25 loss to No. 10 IPFW Saturday. The Mastodons, which played in the NCAA final a year ago, controlled the match from the start.

IPFW hit .469 for the match and was led by Jason Yhost, who had 17 kills and a .762 attack percentage. Tim Wagner was Mercyhurst's top attacker, finishing with nine kills and a .250 attack percentage. He was particularly effective in game three, picking up five of his kills in that stanza.

Mercyhurst hung close in the early going of all three games but IPFW eventually pulled away. The Lakers did have a season-low eight service errors.

IPFW improves to 1-2 on the season and 1-1 in MIVA play. The Mastodons opened the season with a five-game loss to No. 9 Ohio State and a four-game loss Friday night to No. 1 BYU. Mercyhurst, now 0-4 on the season and 0-1 in conference play, will head on the road to play at Medaille Tuesday at 7 p.m.
