Fava, Marnick Advance at ITA Regional

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Mercyhurst's Mariano Fava and Lee Michael Marnik won a pair of matches at the ITA Regional at the University of Indianapolis to advance to the round of 16. Fava, the five seed in the 'A' Singles Draw, defeated Northern Kentucky's Michael Volkov, 6-2, 6-1, in the first round. The senior then dispatched Bodene Scott of Southern Indiana, 6-1, 6-0. Scott had ended the Laker Ronald Heurich's day in the first round, taking a 6-4, 6-3 decision. Mercyhurst's other player in the 'A' Draw, Marnik, captured victories in both of his matches on the first day. The 15-seed defeated Nick Jansson-Bernard of Bellarmine, 6-1, 6-4, in the first round. He then ran into Levi Musser of UIndy in the second round and won 3-6, 6-2, 10-8. Fava and Marnik also teamed up in the 'A' Doubles draw. After a first round bye, the Laker duo took an 8-4 score from Lake Superior State's Pawel Wegrzyn and Simon Laliberte to advance to advance to the quarterfinals. Kyle King lost in the first round of the 'B' Singles draw, falling 6-1, 6-2 to Grand Valley's Matt Globerson. King and Heurich are slated to play in the 'B' doubles draw and will open play against Ryan Diebold and Jose Rivas of UIndy in the first round. Action at the ITA Regional continues on Saturday, September 23 and Sunday, September 24. |
