Lakers Finish Fifth At GLIAC Tournament
April 20, 2008
Midland, Mich. - The Mercyhurst men's tennis team completed the GLIAC Tournament with a 2-1 record and a fifth-place finish by defeating Lake Superior State 5-0 Sunday. The Lakers entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed and lost their opening round match to No. 4 seed Wayne State before defeating Findlay and Lake Superior State. Mercyhurst swept the doubles matches in fairly easy fashion, picking up an 8-1 victory by Tim Hansson and Mateusz Przybysz at No. 1 doubles. Mijo Cotic and Adam Marnik paired up for an 8-5 win at No. 2 and Kyle King and Ronald Heurich won 8-3 at No. 3. The Lakers needed to win just two singles matches to clinch the victory and Cotic and Heurich quickly disposed of their opponents. Cotic won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 and Heurich won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5. Lake Superior State drops to 9-13 with the loss and Mercyhurst improves to 8-9. The Lakers' season has likely come to a close as the team is not currently ranked in the top eight in the region to qualify for an NCAA playoff spot. |
