Lakers Clinch Third Place In GLIAC With Win Over Wayne State

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst men's tennis team clinched third place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference by defeating Wayne State 5-4 Saturday. The Lakers won two of three doubles matches and split singles play.

Mariano Fava and Lee Michael Marnik got the Lakers off on the right foot with their 15th straight doubles victory, posting an 8-3 win at the No. 1 spot. Mateusz Przybysz and Ronald Heurich added an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

Marnik picked up a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles and Przybysz added a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 4, pushing the Lakers to within one more win of the team victory.

At the No. 1 spot, Fava, ranked No. 13 in the region, defeated opponent Antoine Marenaud, ranked No. 15 in the region, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 for the critical fifth point.

Wayne State falls to 8-8 overall and 3-4 in the GLIAC with the loss. Mercyhurst improves to 13-5 overall and finishes 5-2 in conference play. A year ago, the Lakers went 10-10.

Mercyhurst will compete in the GLIAC Championships April 21-22.
