Feb. 27, 2007
Hilton Head, S.C. - The Mercyhurst men's tennis team overcame its first serious challenge in four matches on Spring Break, defeating St. John's 5-4 Tuesday in Hilton Head, S.C. The Lakers dropped two of three doubles matches and forfeited No. 6 singles, putting Mercyhurst down 3-1 and needing to win four of five singles matches. The Lakers responded by doing just that to get the win. Mariano Fava and Lee Michael Marnik were the only doubles winners, picking up an 8-4 victory to improve to 10-1 on the year at the No. 1 spot. Then Fava and Marnik led the charge in singles by winning at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Fava won 6-1, 6-2 and Marnik picked up a 6-4, 6-2 victory. Mateusz Przbysz followed suit with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 3 and Kyle King took a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5. Those four victories clinched the win for the Lakers. St. John's fell to 5-2 on the year with the loss, while Mercyhurst improved to 7-2 overall. The Lakers will have a day off before playing Cabrini Thursday at 11 a.m. in their final match at Hilton Head. |
