Lakers Drop Spring Opener To Carnegie Mellon

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst men's tennis team opened its spring season with an 8-1 loss to NCAA Division III No. 14 Carnegie Mellon Sunday at Pennbriar Athletic Club. The Lakers' lone win came at No. 3 doubles behind the play of sophomores Ronald Heurich and Kyle King. Heurich and King picked up a 9-7 victory against Carnegie Mellon's Yiran Liu and Alex Nemerov. King improved to 2-1 on the year in doubles play dating back to the fall season. Mercyhurst struggled at the bottom of the singles lineup but played tough at the top. Freshman Tim Hansson dropped a hard-fought match 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 and sophomore Mateusz Przybysz lost 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2. The entire Laker lineup was made up of freshmen and sophomores. Carnegie Mellon moves to 4-1 on the season with after winning three of four fall matches and Mercyhurst drops to 0-3 after losing both of its fall matches. The Lakers are now off until traveling to Hilton Head Island, S.C. for spring break Feb. 24 through Feb. 29. |
