Lakers Open GLIAC Door With Loss To Northwood

Oct. 15, 2006

Stats

Midland, Mich. - The Mercyhurst men's soccer team had a chance to just about sew up the GLIAC regular season championship Sunday against Northwood, but the Timberwolves opened the door by beating the Lakers 2-1 in overtime. With the loss, Mercyhurst now holds just a half game lead in the standings.

Mercyhurst entered the game at 5-0 in conference play, while Northwood was the only other team with less than two losses at 4-2 on the year. A win would have given the Lakers a three loss cushion with only four conference games to play. But the Timberwolves' Filip Dabovic scored twice as Northwood overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit.

Kurt Young continued his onslaught with his 14th goal of the season in the 41st minute. That mark broke the school record for goals by a freshman and put Mercyhurst ahead 1-0 at the break after a dominating effort. The Lakers held a 7-1 advantage in shots during the first 45 minutes.

Things slowly began to turn in the second half as Northwood outshot Mercyhurst 9-3. Dabovic finally broke through with just over 11 minutes to play in regulation on an assist from Art Neilson that sent the game to overtime.

In the overtime session, Dabovic's goal in the 100th minute sealed the victory for Northwood, ending Mercyhurst's unblemished run through the GLIAC.

Now 13-3 overall, Mercyhurst will need to be sharp the rest of the season to hold onto the conference lead. The Lakers will finish out the road campaign this weekend by playing at Ashland Friday and at Findlay Sunday. Mercyhurst beat Ashland 3-0 and Findlay 4-0 at home earlier this year.
