Mercyhurst Earns First Home Win with 5-3 Win Over Findlay

Oct. 12, 2007

Box Score

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Lakers men's soccer team earned its first home win on Friday in a 5-3 decision over GLIAC opponent, the Findlay Oilers. The Lakers improve to 6-7-2 and 4-4-0 in the GLIAC. The Oilers drop to 4-7-1 overall and 1-3-1 in conference play.

Mercyhurst's offensive duo of sophomore Kurt Young and freshman Billy Colton could not be stopped on Friday as they teamed up for a combined 12 points. Colton scored his first collegiate hat trick with three goals, while Young provided a little of everything with two goals and two assists.

Young scored the Lakers first goal off of a Nicholas Thompson corner kick in the second minute of play. The Findlay Oilers responded a little over ten minutes later with a goal to make the score even at one. Colton fought back though and scored his first goal of the game off of a Young assist to close out the second half 2-1 in favor of the Lakers.

In the second half, Colton finished the opportunity on his fourth penalty kick of the season in the 62nd minute to bring the Lakers to a 3-1 advantage. Findlay responded less than one minute later with its second goal and then the tying third goal at the 71st minute mark.

The Lakers would have the final say though when Colton and Young each added a goal a piece to seal the win.

The Lakers remain at home to face the Ashland Eagles on Sunday. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m., directly following the women's match.
