Lakers Drop a 2-1 Decision to Saginaw Valley

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Lakers men's soccer team lost 2-1 to the Saginaw Valley Cardinals on Sunday in a very close, hard fought match. Mercyhurst drops to 5-6-2 overall and 3-4 in the GLIAC. With the win, Saginaw Valley improves to 5-6-1 and 2-2-1 in the GLIAC. Sophomore Kurt Young scored the Lakers lone goal at the 19th minute mark off of a corner kick from sophomore Stephen Duggan. Young now has six goals and six assists for the year, totaling 18 points. Duggan's assist was his first points this season. The Mercyhurst Lakers held most of the momentum in a very physical game until the Cardinals turned on their offense around the 84th minute mark. Sophomore Brennan MacMillan came of the bench to score the tying goal unassisted for Saginaw Valley. A little over a minute later, senior Jimmy Henry gave his team the game winner off of an assist from junior John Pizanis. Mercyhurst out shot Saginaw Valley 17-16 but the Cardinals held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Daniel Mudd finished the day with three saves. The Lakers will continue its hone stance when it plays Houghton on Oct. 9th. Game time is set for 4 p.m. |
