Northwood Upends Mercyhurst 6-4

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst men's soccer team lost a 6-4 thriller to Northwood on Friday. The Lakers sacrifice a key GLIAC win, dropping to 5-5-2 overall and 3-3 in conference play. The Northwood Timberwolves earned their first GLIAC win, improving to 3-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the GLIAC. Mercyhurst garnered the first goal of the game as sophomore Billy Ninopoulos scored unassisted at the 15 minute mark with a rocket from right outside the box. Northwood fired back eight minutes later on an unassisted goal from sophomore Steve Hufstader. At the 34th minute mark, the Lakers made a two goal run when freshman Billy Colton scored an assisted goal from sophomore Kurt Young. Less than one minute later, junior Sean Spangler tallied the Lakers third goal of the match to put the Lakers up by two. Northwood would not roll over though and embarked on its own three goal run to close out the half. The Timberwolves received two of its three goals from balls that hit of the post and found the back of the net. After the first half, the score remained 4-3 in favor of Northwood. In the second half, Northwood came out strong and tallied its fourth straight goal in the 57th minute. Mercyhurst responded though at the 66th minute when freshman Billy Colton finished his third penalty kick of the year. Unfortunately, the Timberwolves would have the last say when sophomore Ross Aitchison placed a header off a corner kick into the back of the net in the 76th minute. Mercyhurst out shot Northwood 22-18 and junior Daniel Mudd finished with seven saves on the day. Mercyhurst will return to the field when it hosts Saginaw Valley State on Sunday. Game time is set for 3 p.m. |
