Mercyhurst Lakers Improve in GLIAC with 4-1 Win Over Ashland

Ashland, Ohio - The Mercyhurst Lakers men's soccer team went 2-0 in the GLIAC this week with a convincing 4-1 win over Ashland on Sunday. The Lakers beat Findlay 2-1 on Friday. Ashland now posts a 0-9-1 record and is currently 0-2-1 in the GLIAC. Mercyhurst is climbing in the GLIAC standings with a 3-2 record in conference play and 5-4-2 overall. Freshman Billy Colton and sophomore Kurt Young continue to reek havoc on opponent's defense, and had a hand in all four goals on Sunday against Ashland. Colton produced a multiple goal game and came away with two goals and one assist on the day. Young added a tally into both point columns as well with one goal and one assist. Colton and Young now total for 29 out of their team's 49 total points on the year. Colton struck first for the Lakers off of an unassisted goal in the 13th minute. Young added the second goal of the match for Mercyhurst by chipping a 15-yarder over the keeper at the 32nd minute mark off of an assist from Colton. Mercyhurst kept up the pace from the first half with a unassisted goal from Colton only a minute and a half into the second half. Ashland tallied its lone goal in the 71st minute off of a header from freshman Zach Il'Giovine. Junior Robbie Kennerney added the Lakers last goal off an assist from Young with 12 minutes left in the match. Mercyhurst out shot Ashland 20-8 and produced six corner kicks to Ashland's eight. Junior goalkeeper Daniel Mudd finished the match with four saves. Mercyhurst returns home for another GLIAC match against Northwood on Friday. Game time is set for 4 p.m. |
