Lakers Back To Old Tricks In Shutout Of Saginaw Valley

Sept. 23, 2006

Stats

Erie, Pa. - After having its six game shutout streak ended in a 3-2 overtime win against Gannon Wednesday, the Mercyhurst men's soccer team was back at it again with a 4-0 shutout of GLIAC foe Saginaw Valley Saturday. The Lakers held the Cardinals to only two shots on goal in running their win streak to eight games.

Now 9-1 on the year, Mercyhurst surpassed its win total from a year ago with a stifling defensive effort and an explosive second half. Daniel Mudd, the GLIAC Player of the Week, recorded his 11th career shutout by making both of his saves in the second half.

Three players recorded their first goals of the season as Nicholas Thompson, Zach Hiltner and Matt Richards all posted second half tallies. Tyler Emerick scored his eighth goal of the year by posting the game-winner in the 12th minute of action. Kyle Jackson had two assists, while Dan Young and Jeffrey Powell added one each.

Mercyhurst, which holds a comfortable lead in the GLIAC standings at 4-0, will venture outside of the conference to host Northern Kentucky Sunday at 3 p.m.
