ERIE, Pa. - A goal by Kyle Jackson at 101:25 gave Mercyhurst (8-1, 2-0 GLIAC) its seventh straight victory with a 3-2 win over crosstown rival Gannon (6-4, 1-2 GLIAC) in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) showdown. The win was the Lakers eighth of the season, matching the team's total for all of 2005.

Gannon got on the board first with a goal from Rudi Costa at 22:46 that snapped the Lakers 567:07 scoreless string dating back to September 1 against Truman State. Costa's goal was the lone score of the half as Gannon went into the break ahead 1-0.

The Lakers came out with a pair of second half goals to take a 2-1 lead. Jason Pedra converted a penalty kick at 48:18 to knot the score at one apiece.

Tyler Emerick gave Mercyhurst the lead at 73:36 with an assist from Kurt Young.

The lead did not last long, however, as Costa netted his second goal of the evening late, in the 87th minute to send the game to overtime.

Neither team scored during the first extra period, setting the stage for Jackson's dramatics. Pedra fed the junior, who got ahead of the defense and beat the Golden Knights' Matthew Ruston to end the game.

Pedra had a goal and an assist for two points in the game.

Daniel Mudd made four saves in goal for Mercyhurst. Ruston had two for Gannon.

Gannon outshot the Lakers 25-15, but held only a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal.

It was the first overtime game of 2006 for the Lakers.

Mercyhurst plays a pair of games over the weekend, as Saginaw Valley visits Erie on September 23 and Northern Kentucky follows on September 24.
