Mercyhurst Suffers a Disappointing 2-1 Loss in Overtime to Gannon

Sept. 11, 2007

Box Score

Erie, Pa. - It was a disappointing Tuesday as the Mercyhurst Lakers men's soccer team failed to complete the upset against conference foe Gannon. The Lakers fell to the Golden Knights 2-1 in overtime. Gannon improves to 4-0-0 on the season and 1-0 in the GLIAC, while Mercyhurst falls to 2-3-2 this year and 0-1 in the GLIAC.

Freshman Billy Colton tallied the lone goal for the Lakers at the 25 minute mark off of a pass from junior Kurt Young. The Golden Knights would not strike back until the 82nd minute when sophomore Dan Howell found the back of the net. Howell was assisted by fellow forward junior Chad Wynter. Wynter and Howell would hook up again for the game winning goal in overtime. Wynter headed in the ball off a saved Howell shot to end the Lakers' hopes of a upset.

Mercyhurst won both the corner kick and save category with a 7-2 and 10-6 advantage. Despite firing off nine shots to Gannon's six in the first half, Mercyhurst fell in the shots category 21-17.

Junior Daniel Mudd had a stellar day in goal, recording 10 saves. Gannon had many opportunities in the second half that were thwarted by a determined Mudd and defensive company.

Mercyhurst will have an opportunity to avenge its loss to the Golden Knight when the two teams meet again on Oct. 27.

Now the Lakers will prepare to travel to play Northwood on Friday. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
