Truman State Hands Mercyhurst Men's Soccer First Loss
Sept. 1, 2006
Erie, Pa. - The Truman State men's soccer team broke a 1-1 tie on a goal with under five minutes to play as Mercyhurst lost for the first time Friday. The Bulldogs held on for the 2-1 win as the Lakers fell to 1-1 on the season.
Truman State (0-1-2) was the aggressor early and Matt Taylor put the Bulldogs ahead 30 minutes into play. A pass from Aldo Muniz led Taylor towards the goal and he got his shot off just before he went sprawling over Mercyhurst goalkeeper Daniel Mudd.
The Lakers, though, evened the score less than five minutes later when senior captain Jason Pedra scored on a direct kick from about 25 yards out that Truman keeper Chris Kirkweg was only able to barely deflect and still found its way into the back of the net.
In the second half, Mercyhurst began to impose its will and had a number of chances to take the lead. However, Truman was the one that finally broke the tie as Taylor was able to break free for a shot and Gavin Kempe picked up the deflection and scored for the game-winner.
Truman State held a 15-9 advantage in shots, but Mercyhurst had a 7-3 corner kick edge.
The Lakers will host Rockhurst Sunday at 2:30 p.m. |
