Lund Scores First Career Goal In 2-1 Heartbreaking Loss
Aug. 24, 2007
Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season to Southern Indiana 2-1 Friday. It was a heartbreaker for the Lakers after fighting two overtimes after an emotional comeback in the second half to tie the game in regulation. Mercyhurst freshman Thomas Lund maneuvered around multiple Eagles' defenders with less than five minutes remaining in regulation and ripped a shot from just outside the box to find the upper right hand corner of the net and tie the score at 1-1. That goal came after Carl Carr scored with less than 18 minutes remaining on an indirect kick to put the Screaming Eagles ahead 1-0. Carr shot the ball perfectly around the defensive wall into the lower right hand corner of the net. Carr finished as the hero when he scored on a penalty kick late in the second overtime. His shot found the lower right hand corner past Lakers' goalkeeper Daniel Mudd to steal the season opening win from the Lakers. The Lakers earned many opportunities at the Eagles' goal with eight corners and 29 shots but could only manage to place 7-of-29 shots on the face of the goal. Southern Indiana executed 5-of-10 shots at Lakers' goalkeeper Mudd and left him with three saves on the day. Southern Indiana's Andrew Hults recorded six saves on the day. The Lakers dominated the possession in the first half with 11 shots to Southern Indiana's five. The story remained the same in the second half with the Lakers outshooting the Eagles 13-3. The Lakers managed five shots in the overtime periods, while the Eagles only could create two opportunities. Southern Indiana improves to 1-0 on the year, while Mercyhurst falls to 0-1. The Lakers will be in action again when they host Kentucky Wesleyan Sunday at 1 p.m. |
