Founded in 1971, the Mercyhurst rowing program was the first team sport to receive varsity status on campus. This tradition has put the program in a special place within the heart of the Mercyhurst community. In 2004, rowing brought the college's first NCAA Championship home to Mercyhurst.
As an NCAA Division II college, Mercyhurst offers rowing scholarships awarded on the basis of individual need and athletic ability. Mercyhurst recruits character and places more of an emphasis on individual work ethic, academic ability, and passion for rowing, than size and ergometer scores.
The student-athletes' participation in rowing at Mercyhurst will allow them to value and enjoy this challenge, which will ultimately benefit their educational experience. Mercyhurst rowing trains and develops intelligent successful rowers; our athletes must train and row better, not necessarily harder.
Mercyhurst rowing believes in training the body and the mind. Our student-athletes balance their lives to achieve high standards in academics and athletics. Mercyhurst's training program is based on quality rather than quantity, which maximizes the student-athletes time to train, while allowing them to maintain their responsibilities outside of rowing.
Training in the fall is focused on endurance and basic technique. This involves high volume training on the water as well as some land workouts. These workouts develop the technique that has been the trademark foundation of the Mercyhurst rowing success. Winter training builds endurance and strength through ergometer, tank, spinning, weight training, running, stairs, swimming, and other aerobic workouts. During winter, athletes shine in their individual progress and continue to perfect their basic rowing technique in preparation for spring. The spring season focuses on racing with an emphasis on intensity over volume.
