Lacrosse Alumni Making Impacts

Dec. 6, 2007

Erie, Pa. - A pair of 2006 Mercyhurst College men's lacrosse alumni have made moves in the lacrosse community recently. Mike McLellan was selected with the 15th pick in the 2007 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) supplemental draft after spending the past two seasons in the National Lacrosse League (NLL). Also, former teammate Greg Stocks has been named the head coach for the new men's lacrosse team at Lake Erie College, scheduled to begin play in 2010.

McLellan played just one game for the Arizona Sting in 2006 but became an impact player in NLL last year. He had 26 goals and 44 points in 16 games for the New York Titans and will continue to play for the team in 2008. He will also play for the Los Angeles Riptide after being selected in the second round of the draft. The NLL is the professional indoor lacrosse league and plays from January through April while MLL bills itself as the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league and begins its schedule in May.

Stocks has served as an assistant coach at Lycoming College and Wingate University since graduating from Mercyhurst and will begin the process of building a program from scratch at Lake Erie. The program will compete as a club sport in 2009 and will give Lake Erie 16 sports when intercollegiate varsity play begins in 2010. Lake Erie's football coach, Mark McNellie, spent 17 years as an assistant football coach at Mercyhurst before moving into the head coaching role for the Storm in August of 2006.
