May 3, 2008

Box Score

Erie, Pa. - The No.7 Mercyhurst men's lacrosse team sent its seniors out in style Saturday with a convincing 14-8 upset win over No.6 Adelphi. Mike Bartlett led the Lakers with four goals, one in each period of play. Mercyhurst climbs to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the ECC. The Adelphi Panthers fall to 7-5 this season and 3-3 in conference play.

Adelphi scored four of its eight goals in the first fifteen minutes of play. The Panthers got on the board first at the 13:54 minute mark. The Lakers would respond though with goals from Todd Richardson, Bartlett, and Jordan Witt. Adelphi led 4-3 going into the second period. Michael Scuilli would put an end to that though at the 10:31 mark in the beginning of the second and the Panthers would never led again.

The Laker defensive unit and goalkeeper Jason LaShomb would hold Adelphi to only nine shots over the second and third periods and allow only two goals. Lashomb recorded nine saves in the win. Mercyhurst only committed four turnovers in the first half and 14 total in the game. The Panthers turned the ball over 24 times and were outshot by the Lakers 53 to 34.

In the final three periods of play, Mercyhurst outscored the Panthers 11-4. Eight different people tallied goals and nine of the Lakers' goals were unassisted. Mike Thon stepped up with Bartlett and put three goals of his own in the back of the net. Tyler Burton recorded two goals while Zach Manuel, Witt and Richardson tallied one. Sciulli tallied one goal and two assists on the day while senior Scott Sullivan dished out one assist.

Seniors Sullivan, Witt, Brian Perkins, Joe Koennecke, Karl Heinz, and Chris Waheibi played in the contest and helped the Lakers to the win.

Mercyhurst will now have to wait until Sunday night for the NCAA selection show when the committee will determine if the Lakers will have a postseason.
