Brendon Burke is in his second season as the assistant men's lacrosse coach at Mercyhurst. He is responsible primarily for the defense and recruiting. Last year's squad thrived on the defensive side of the field under Burke. The Lakers ranked second in the country, allowing just 6.87 goals per game, and held opponents to just 21.2 percent on man-up scoring opportunities. He developed three All-Americans in 2007 in Joe Thon (the NCAA Division II Defensive Player of the Year), Mike Grizanti and goalkeeper Jason LaShomb. Burke came to Mercyhurst after spending two seasons at Division I Canisius College. During his stay at the Buffalo, N.Y. campus, Burke was the Griffins defensive coach and recruiting coordinator. He helped lead Canisius to the 2006 MAAC semifinals and a share of its first ever regular season league championship. Before Canisius, Burke was an assistant coach at SUNY-Cortland. In 2003, he helped lead the Red Dragons to a No. 2 ranking in the country, winning the SUNYAC regular season championship, and reaching the NCAA Division III tournament. Burke played at the Division II level at St. Andrew's Presbyterian College, where he was a four year starter for the Knights, captained the team his senior year, and helped lead the team to the 2002 NCAA Division II semifinals. At the conclusion of 2003, Burke graduated from St. Andrew's with a bachelors degree in business administration. He continued his education at Canisius, earning a masters degree in sports administration in 2006. Burke is also an adjunct professor in the business school. |
