Yale Subdues Mercyhurst, 6-3

Nov. 22, 2005

Box Score

New Haven, Conn. - Yale senior forward Nate Jackson scored twice and junior netminder Matt Modelski made 24 saves as the Bulldogs skated past Mercyhurst 6-3 Tuesday night. The Bulldogs won for the first time in 2005-06 (1-6-0) while the Lakers (7-4-0) lost for the third time in their last five in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

Mercyhurst (7-4) entered the game ranked second in the country in scoring, but was outshot 39-27 and cashed just one of eight power-play opportunities.

The Blue and Green led 2-1 after a period on goals by freshman forward Chris Trafford and junior defenseman Jamie Hunt, both collecting their fourth goals of the season. The Bulldogs scored twice in the middle stanza to take a 3-2 lead after forty minutes. Jackson's first of two gave the Bulldogs the lead at 9:20.

The Lakers tied the game on an early third period power play goal by senior forward Scott Reynolds, his fourth, but Jackson's second goal of the game eight minutes later at 9:44 proved decisive. Yale finished the scoring with a pair of goals late in the period to thwart any hopes of a Mercyhurst comeback.

Mercyhurst junior goaltender Jordan Wakefield suffered his first loss of the season. Junior forward Scott Champagne extended his scoring streak to 30 games with an assist on Reynolds power play tally in the third.

Mercyhurst won't have much time to regroup as Ferris State visits the Ice Center for a pair of games Thanksgiving weekend. Both the Friday and Saturday night games are due to start at 7:00pm. The contests will be the first-ever meetings on the ice between the two schools.
