Holy Cross snapped a 1-1 tie late in the second period and went on from there to down Mercyhurst 4-1 Friday night at the Ice Center. The Crusaders improved to 2-1 on the young season and kept the Lakers winless in five games. The contest was the conference opener for each team.

Holy Cross sophomore center Ryan Driscoll broke a scoreless tie late in the first period with a power play goal, one of three the Crusaders would register before the night was over.

The Lakers tied the game with less than four minutes to play in the second when freshman forward Brandon Coccimiglio notched his first collegiate goal just 19 seconds after a Holy Cross penalty. The Burlington, Ontario, native was assisted by linemates Ben Cottreau and Ryan Toomey. But Holy Cross recaptured the advantage less than a minute later when sophomore winger Brodie Sheahan, the game's first star, tallied the game's only even strength marker.

Holy Cross then put the game away with consecutive third period power play goals slightly more than three minutes apart. Freshman forward Joe Brock lit the lamp at 11:15 and senior Dale Reinhardt followed suit at 14:21.

Mercyhurst freshman goaltender Ryan Zapolski made his fourth straight start and turned aside 26 Holy Cross shots. Freshman Adam Roy, the game's second star, stopped 43 Mercyhurst scoring attempts.

Holy Cross finished 3 of 7 on the power play while the Lakers were 1 of 4.

The two teams will conclude the weekend series tomorrow night at 7:05.
