Bentley Outlasts Lakers in AH Semis, 3-2 (2OT)

March 17, 2006

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. -

Jaye Judd took a defelection off the boards and placed it past Tyler Small to give Bentley a 3-2 double overtime win over Mercyhurst in the Atlantic Hockey semifinals.

Judd was an unlikely hero for the Falcons (15-16-5), who move on to face Holy Cross in the championship game.  The sophomore defenseman entered the game without a goal on the season, but scored a pair of goals - including the game-winner - against the Lakers.

Tyler Small made 53 saves in net for Mercyhurst, who ends its season with record of 22-13-1.

Neither team scored in the first period, but in the second period Jamie Hunt gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead at 16:55.  Dave Borelli and Scott Champagne got assists on the score.

Bentley regrouped and scored the next two goals to grab a 2-1 advantage in the third period.  The Falcons tied the score at 1-1 when Tom Dickhudt, who assisted on all three Bentley goals, aided Judd's first goal at 2:55 into the third on a power paly.  Mike Zwicky gave the Falcons the lead just five minutes later, with assists going to Dickhudt and Josh Chase.

Mercyhurst would not go down quietly, however.  Scott Champagne knotted the score at 2-2 with a goal at 15:37 in the third, assisted by Ben Couttreau and Denis Kirstein.  The Lakers came out firing in the first overtime, before Bentley balanced the shot count near the end of the period.

In the second overtime, the Falcons' Josh Chase got a shot off the opening face off.  Judd then sealed the game with his game-winner just 58 seconds into the second overtime to seal the Lakers' fate.

Ray Jean made 32 saves for Bentley.

The Falcons outshot the Lakers 56-39.  Neither team was very successful on the power play.  Mercyhurst went 0-of-10, while Bentley was 1-of-11.

The Atlantic Hockey Championship is scheduled for 7:00 PM on Saturday, March 18.
