Connecticut Edges Mercyhurst 3-2

Jan. 19, 2008

Stats

Storrs, Ct. - Connecticut junior forward Chris Myhro's second goal of the game, with just over seven minutes to play, proved decisive as Connecticut edged Mercyhurst 3-2 Saturday. The Huskies improved to 7-13-2 overall and to 6-8-2 in the tightly-bunched Atlantic Hockey Association. The Lakers, who tied UConn 3-3 in overtime Friday, dropped to 7-14-3 and 7-6-3 respectively. The setback also ended the Lakers's six-game conference unbeaten streak.

Freshman forward Jason Krispel and Myhro connected for UConn in a wide-open first twenty minutes as the teams combined for 31 shots, 18 by the Lakers.

Freshman Brandon Coccimiglio's seventh goal of the season, a power play at 8:40 of the middle period, cut the lead in half. Coccimiglio was helped by sophomore defenseman Cullen Eddy. The Lakers doubled the Huskies in second period shots, 16-8.

Senior forward Ben Cottreau stretched his scoring streak to nine games when he lit the lamp for the 8th time this season at 10:11 of the final period to knot the game at 2-2. Cottreau was helped by freshman winger Mike Gurtler. That set the stage for Myhro's heroics less than three minutes later. Mercyhurst junior goalie Matt Lundin (5-7-2) was pulled for an extra attacker late in the game, but the Huskies, anchored by sophomore netminder Beau Erickson (7-12-2), denied the equalizer.

Mercyhurst outshot UConn 43-29 and had the game's lone power play goal in five tries. The Huskies finished 0 for 7.

Mercyhurst will continue its six-game road trip next weekend when it visits Bentley for Friday and Saturday night games.
