Mercyhurst and Connecticut Settle for 3-3 Overtime Tie

Storrs, Ct. - Mercyhurst and Connecticut battled to a 3-3 overtime tie Frdday night in Atlantic Hockey Association action. The tie is only the second in the 30-game series between the teams, which Mercyhurst leads 21-7-2.

Connecticut scored the first period's lone goal when Jeff Sapiera connected on an early power play chance. The Lakers outshout the Huskies 9-5 in the opening twenty minutes.

Junior forward Brett Robinson tied the game at 4:48 of the second with his fifth goal of the season. Robinson was helped by Ben Cottreau, who extended his scoring streak to eight games, and Brandon Coccimiglio. But UConn recaptured the lead nearly eight minutes later when Andrew Olson beat junior Matt Lundin (5-6-2). Mercyhurst enjoyed a 15-7 advantage in second period shots.

Sophomore defenseman Matt Fennell collected his fourth goal of the season and third in the last two games, at 2:44 of the third, to square the contest at 2-2. Fennell was assisted by freshman Scott Pitt and Cottreau. The score stayed that way until Connecticut's Matt Pedemonti lit the lamp at 12:17. But the resilient Lakers got the equalizer a little more than two minutes later when Pitt parked his fifth of the year behind UConn goalie Beau Erickson (6-12-2). Freshmen Steve Cameron and Jesse Echternach assisted. Neither team was able to score during the remainder of regulation and five minutes of overtime,

Mercyhurst outshot Connecticut 32-19. Both teams finished 1 of 6 with the man advantage.

The teams will conclude the two-game series Saturday night at 7:05.
