Mercyhurst To Host 2005 GLIAC Men's Golf Championships
Oct. 7, 2005 North East, Pa. - Mercyhurst College is hosting this year's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's golf championships. All play will be conducted at Lake View Country Club, the team's home track.
Lake View, situated just south of Interstate 90 on Route 89 in North East, Pennsylvania, has played host to both the 1984 and the 1989 NCAA Division II National Championships as well as the 1996 Pennsylvania State Amateur and the 2002 Western Pennsylvania Amateur.
Play begins with a practice round on Sunday afternoon, October 9th. The championship will kickoff on Monday morning at 8:00am as play begins on both #1 and #10 tees. All players will complete two rounds (36 holes) on Monday. The final round will begin at 9:00am on Tuesday morning with the top five teams from Monday's play starting on hole #1 and the teams positioned 6-10 beginning play on #10. A short awards ceremony will follow play on Tuesday.
Ferris State University is the defending champion, defeating the University of Findlay by 11 strokes last year at the Blackberry Patch G.C. in Coldwater, Michigan. The event was hosted by Hillsdale College. There will be no defending individual champion as Ryan Johnson of Wayne State University, who shot rounds of 73-73-75=221 to edge Alex Balog of Ferris State by two strokes, is being redshirted this year. Mercyhurst finished 9th of 12 teams last year with Craig Bishop leading the way with rounds of 73-78-80=231, good for a tie for 9th place individually.
