Lakers' Depth Provides Win At Gannon Invitational

Erie, Pa. - Steve Barr shot 4-under par over the final nine holes and the Mercyhurst golf team used its fifth-man score to edge Gannon at the Gannon Invitational Tuesday at Lake Shore Country Club. Just two days after Gannon won the Mercyhurst Invitational by four strokes over the Lakers, the two teams tied with identical 296 team scores at the Gannon Invitational. In order to break the tie, the score of the fifth-best golfer was used. Both Ryan McNulty and Patrick Jackson shot a 78 for Mercyhurst, while Gannon's Bobby Scalise finished with an 83. Slippery Rock ended third with a 325, while Edinboro was last with a 362. Barr finished with a 3-under par 69 to tie Gannon's Rob Hersch for medalist honors. Both golfers shot a 1-over 37 on the front nine before rallying with a 4-under 32 over the final nine holes. Tyler Bidwell finished with Mercyhurst's next-best score, shooting a 1-over 73, and Ben Deets finished with a 4-over 76. Golfing unattached, Mercyhurst's Darragh Agnew shot a 90. Mercyhurst is now off until the spring season when the Lakers will compete in the Northern Kentucky Invitational March 15-16. |
